High drama in Rajya Sabha as chairman schools TMC MP for creating ruckus over Vinesh Phogat's disqualification
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar called out TMC MP Derek O' Brien
Members of the Opposition INDIA bloc walked out of the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) of the Parliament after they were not allowed to discuss the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics 2024.
Chairman of the House, Jagdeep Dhankhar came down heavily on the MPs, especially Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, Derek O'Brien, who shouted to be allowed to speak on the issue.
“They (Opposition) think they are the only ones whose hearts are bleeding. The entire nation is in pain because of the girl. Everyone is sharing the situation but to monetise it, politicise it, is the greatest disrespect to the girl. That girl has a long way to go.”
Scolding the TMC MP, Dhankhar added: “How dare you shout at the chair and senior leaders are not taking note of it. Your conduct is the ugliest in the House. Next time I will show you the door.”
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was the first to stand up and raise the 'disqualification' issue. Kharge said his party and alliance partners wanted to know who was behind the chain of events that led to India missing out on a gold medal opportunity.
However, Dhankhar did not allow Kharge to take up the issue, which led to O'Brien creating a ruckus in the House.As uproar increased in the House, Opposition leaders staged a walkout.

Vinesh Phogat announces retirement
A day after being disqualified from the 50kg category for being 100 grammes overweight, Phogat on Thursday (Aug 8) announced her retirement.
"Mother, wrestling won and I lost to it, please forgive me. Your dreams, my strength, everything is shattered, I don't have any more strength left in me," she said in a social media post.
Phogat has appealed her disqualification at theCourt of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and a ruling is likely to come on Thursday.
