BJP had won 115 seats in 2012 but fell short of the 100-seat mark in 2017 as the Patidar anger bit into its final tally though it was able to fight off the dreaded anti-incumbency factor across the state.

BJP's 99 seats is the lowest for a single winning party or pre-poll alliance in Gujarat since 1975.

Majority of exits polls have predicted state elections results to swing in BJP's favours.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani; BJP's Gujarat president, Jitu Vaghani and National Spokesperson, All India Congress Committee and Congress MLA from Abdasa constituency Shaktisinh Gohil are some of the key players in this year's Gujarat polls.

While 977 candidates fought it out in the first phase, 851 candidates contested in the second.

A total of 4.32 crore people were eligible to vote in this year's Gujarat assembly elections.

Reports confirmed an average 68.41% polling in the two-phase Gujarat assembly elections, a dip of 2.91% compared to the 2012 polls when 71.32% polling was recorded.

Results for the 14th Gujarat assembly elections 2017 are due today with the counting of votes scheduled to begin around 8 am today.

The polling was conducted in two phases on December 9 and 14 with 977 candidates contesting in phase 1 while 851 fought for seats in the second phase.

Gujarat assembly constitutes a total of 182 seats out of which the BJP secured 120 seats in a landslide victory during Gujarat assembly elections 2012.

The INC managed to secure 43 seats.

Vijay Rupani, BJP MLA from Rajkot West, was announced the Chief Minister of Gujarat after the erstwhile CM, Anandiben Patel (who succeeded PM Narendra Modi) decided to step down in 2016.
