Gujarat election results: BJP wins 99 seats, Congress wins 77
Story highlights
Three Muslims elected to state assembly in Gujarat.
The three MLAs are Javid Peerzada (Wankaner), Gyasuddin Sheikh (Dariapur), and Imran Khedawala (Jamalpur-Khadia)
"The Gujarat verdict has clearly sent a message to the BJP and PM Modi that anger will not help, love will finally conquer it," Congress president Rahul Gandhi reacted on assembly election results.
Of the 98 seats that fall in rural Gujarat, the majority went to the Congress, while the BJP swept the 53 urban seats. Did the farmer’s distress work against the BJP?
Opinion: What BJP and Congress learned from Gujarat elections
BJP had won 115 seats in 2012 but fell short of the 100-seat mark in 2017 as the Patidar anger bit into its final tally though it was able to fight off the dreaded anti-incumbency factor across the state.
BJP's 99 seats is the lowest for a single winning party or pre-poll alliance in Gujarat since 1975.
The victory in Gujarat for the BJP came at the cost of their big guns as several cabinet ministers lost in the assembly polls.
Many describe the Alpesh-Jignesh-Hardik trio as a failed weapon in Congress' arsenal to dethrone the BJP after over two decades.
BJP wins 99 seats, Congress wins 77, 1 seat won by NCP.
Bhartiya Tribal Party and Independent win 2 and 3 seats respectively.
PM Modi thanks Gujarat and Himachal voters, says India now votes only for ‘vikas’

PM Modi speaks at BJP HQ after BJP's win in assembly elections:
- Recent elections results have proven that the country is ready for reform, is looking towards things that perform in a positive way and believes in transformation
- Gujarat election results are historic. In this day and age, for a party to keep winning for so long
- 30 years back, poison of caste was spread so badly in Gujarat that it took workers like me 30 years to get rid of it. In last few months there were attempts again to sow seeds of casteism, but people rejected it. I congratulate them, but people must be alert
- After 2014, there is hunger for development. Even if you do not like BJP, do not try to derail the progress being made towards development
- So many conspiracies were hatched in Gujarat by Congress, misinformation was being spread. People cannot bear if anyone makes fun of 'vikas'
The BJP has officially won the mandate to rule Gujarat for the sixth time. The Election Commission announced on Monday evening that the BJP has won 92 seats in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly

Majority of exits polls have predicted state elections results to swing in BJP's favours.
BJP's win in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will establish party's reign over 19 Indian states.
Dalit rights activist and lawyer, Jignesh Mevani and OBC leader Alpesh Thakor are forces to reckon with against BJP candidates.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani; BJP's Gujarat president, Jitu Vaghani and National Spokesperson, All India Congress Committee and Congress MLA from Abdasa constituency Shaktisinh Gohil are some of the key players in this year's Gujarat polls.
While 977 candidates fought it out in the first phase, 851 candidates contested in the second.
A total of 4.32 crore people were eligible to vote in this year's Gujarat assembly elections.
Reports confirmed an average 68.41% polling in the two-phase Gujarat assembly elections, a dip of 2.91% compared to the 2012 polls when 71.32% polling was recorded.
Results for the 14th Gujarat assembly elections 2017 are due today with the counting of votes scheduled to begin around 8 am today.
The polling was conducted in two phases on December 9 and 14 with 977 candidates contesting in phase 1 while 851 fought for seats in the second phase.
Gujarat assembly constitutes a total of 182 seats out of which the BJP secured 120 seats in a landslide victory during Gujarat assembly elections 2012.
The INC managed to secure 43 seats.
Vijay Rupani, BJP MLA from Rajkot West, was announced the Chief Minister of Gujarat after the erstwhile CM, Anandiben Patel (who succeeded PM Narendra Modi) decided to step down in 2016.
