The Geminid meteor shower can be traced back to dusty debris left behind by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, which Earth passes through every December. This 3.6-mile (5.8-kilometre) wide space rock is the closest to the sun of any named asteroid and is thought to be a strange hybrid of an asteroid and a comet.
