The final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC), prepared to weed out illegal residents from Assam, has been published in Assam.

NRC row: Assamese can't be allowed to become minority in their own land

The list has been published at nrcassam.nic.in, ending the wait of millions of Assam residents who will now get to know whether they are an Indian or a ‘foreigner’.

The NRC is an exercise to identify Indian citizens living in Assam, a state marked by illegal migration from Bangladesh.

Out of 3.30 crore applicants, 3.11 crore were included in the final list. The list of certified Indian citizens in Assam will seal the fate of over 40 lakh people in the state, four years after its implementation began.

"A total of 3,11,21,004 persons found eligible for inclusion in final NRC leaving out 19,06,657 persons including those who did not submit their claims. Those not satisfied with the outcome can file an appeal before Foreigners Tribunals," an NRC official said.

Earlier today, the security arrangement was beefed up in Assam. Police control rooms have been activated and linked with the police headquarters and the NRC headquarters for real-time monitoring of the law and order situation

Several districts including Barpeta has been declared as 'sensitive districts'. Violence had broken out in Barpeta during the NRC pilot project in 2010 and four people were killed in the police firing.

Those who will be excluded from the list will get an opportunity to file an appeal within 120 days in the Foreigners' Tribunal (FT), as per the direction given by the Union Home Ministry, said Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

NRC is a register containing names of Indian citizens, which was prepared for the only time in 1951. It is being updated for Assam as of now to weed out illegal immigrants. The first list of NRC was first published in Assam in 1951. When the draft NRC was published on July 30, 2018, there was a huge controversy over the exclusion of 40.7 lakh people from it.
