Female resident doctor assaulted at Mumbai hospital, days after Kolkata horror rape-murder case

A female resident doctor has been allegedly physically assaulted by a patient and his attendants, who were all in an inebriated state at a Mumbai hospital on Sunday (Aug 18). The incident comes days after a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital was brutally raped and murdered - leading to nationwide outrage.
The incident took place at Sion Hospital in the early hours of Sunday around 3:30 am local time. A group of five to six intoxicated men threatened theon-call residents in the ward. One of them, the woman doctor, sustained injuries while defending herself, according to media reports.
The attendants along with the patient, fled the scene after the incident. The patienthad arrived atthe hospital for treatment after suffering injuries on his face.
The female doctor has given her statement at Sion Police Station and the process of filing the FIR (First Information Report) was underway.
Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) condemned the incident and implored the government to ensure the safety and security of the doctors.
The association also confirmed the chain of events that transpired on Sunday and added that it was an "alarming incident" that highlighted significant security failure.

Earlier this month, a 31-year-old trainee doctor atRG Kar Medical College and Hospital was raped and murdered at the end of her 36-hour shift.
The incident, which was initially reported as a suicide, has drawn severe criticism over its handling by state authorities.
In a scathing judgement, the high court condemned the incident as "gruesome" and expressed concern over alleged attempts to cover it up. The court also ordered that all relevant documents related to the case be transferred to the CBI without delay.
According to the autopsy report,the accused, Sanjoy Roy, hit the victim so hard that the glasses of her spectacles shattered, piercing her eyes.
“Both her eyes and mouth were bleeding and injuries over the face. The victim also had bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg, neck, in her right hand, ring finger and lips," it added.
Notably, after citizens took out a protest against the heinous incident, a group of miscreants barged into the hospital and destroyed the property.
