'Historic day,' tweets Modi as electricity reaches all Indian villages

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter earlier today to share that on Saturday his government achieved complete electricity supply to all villages in the country.

"28th April 2018 will be remembered as a historic day in the development journey of India. Yesterday, we fulfilled a commitment due to which the lives of several Indians will be transformed forever! I am delighted that every single village in India now has access to electricity," read the Prime Minister's tweet.

Manipur's Leisang village was the last one to be brought on the national power grid on Saturday. It was electrified at 5.30pm last evening. The last village to get off-grid electricity access was Manipur's Pakol.

According to official government data, India has 597,464 villages all of which were given electricity supply by last evening.

As per government data, all of India’s 597,464 census villages have now been electrified. Reports suggest there were over 18,000 villages with no electricity supply at the time when NDA's Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) was launched in the year 2015.
