Delhi-NCR to receive more rainfall, thunderstorms this week; yellow alert for next three days
Delhi weather update
Several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) received light to moderate rainfall Tuesday (Aug 13) morning which led to waterlogging in some locations. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more showers today in the region.
The capital city and neighbouring areas are covered with a thick black cloud of rain, indicating more showers accompanied by thunderstorms. In the wake of showers, the authorities have already issued a yellow alert in the region for the next three days.
The maximum and minimum temperatures during the day are likely to be around 33 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
“Light to moderate rainfall accompanied with light thunderstorm and lightning is very likely to occur at few places of Delhi (Vasant Kunj, Hauzkhas, Malviyanagar, Kalkaji, Mahrauli, Tughlakabad, Chhattarpur, IGNOU, Ayanagar, Deramandi), NCR (Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad),” said IMD in its official X post.
On the other hand, the Met department has also issued an orange alert for other states including Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand, predicting heavy showers today.
IMD’s warning for Delhi and Northwest India
The press release dated August 12 states, “Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall very likely over Western Himalayan Region and Scattered to Fairly widespread over plains of northwest India during the week.”
IMD predicted “heavy rainfall” in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan until August 18; in Haryana until August 16; in Jammu and Kashmir over the next three days; and in Punjab on August 14.
The weather bulletin adds, “Isolated very heavy rainfall also very likely over Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan on 13th August.”
The weather agency has also issued an advisory requesting people in Delhi and adjoining areas to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
At least 18 people have died across Delhi-NCR in the last two months due to waterlogging and other reasons. As many as 11 people died due to drowning in waterlogged regions, while seven were electrocuted, data showed.
In the coming week, the Delhi-NCR is set to witness more cloudy skies accompanied by light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and occasional lightning.
