Bangladesh protests: Over 700 Indian students return back home, says New Delhi

The Indian foreign ministryon Saturday (July 20) saidthat more than 700 Indian students fromprotest-ravaged Bangladesh havereturned to India. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)said, "Thus far, 778 Indian students have returned to India through various land ports. In addition, around 200 students have returned home by regular flight services through Dhaka and Chittagong airports."
"The High Commission of India in Dhaka and our Assistant High Commissions are in regular touch with more than 4,000 students remaining in various universities in Bangladesh and are providing necessary assistance. Students from Nepal and Bhutan have also been assisted with their crossing into India on request," the ministry added.
Facilitating safe travel to border
The MEAalso said in coordination with local authorities, measures werebeing takenby the High Commission and the Assistant High Commissions to facilitate safe travel to the border crossing points along the India-Bangladesh International Border.
The ministry added it was also coordinatingwith civil aviation, immigration, land ports, and BSF (Border Security Force) authorities to ensure a smooth passage for Indian citizens to return.

"The High Commission in Dhaka is also coordinating with civil aviation authorities of Bangladesh and commercial airlines to ensure uninterrupted flight services to India from Dhaka and Chittagong, which can be used by our nationals to return to home," said the MEA.
'All Indians in Bangladesh are safe and sound'
Students in Bangladesh are protesting against the quota systemthat reserves more than half of civil service posts for specific groups, including children of veterans from the 1971 liberation war.
So far, at least 115 people have reportedly been killed in the clashes between students and the police and around 1,500 have been injured.

Earlier, the Indian foreign ministry said that all Indian students in Bangladesh were safe and sound.
"All our Indian nationals are safe there (inBangladesh) …we have a large student community as I told you…8,500 students were there about…many of them pursue medical education also in that country," MEAspokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters on Friday.
