Arvind Kejriwal health: Delhi Court rejects CM’s plea seeking personal medical consultation

Arvind Kejriwal

The Rouse Avenue Court on Monday (Apr 22) declined a plea moved by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking direction to Jail Authorities to administer insulin. Kejriwal hadalso asked for permission to allow him to consult his personal doctor through video conferencing daily for 15 minutes in presence of his wife Sunita with respect to his acute diabetes and fluctuating blood sugar level.

Special CBI Judge Kaveri Baweja in the judgment directed that Kejriwal should be provided "requisite medical treatment" in jail by authorities. It further noted that in case of requirement of any special consultation, the jail authorities shall contact a medical board constituted by the director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), consisting of an endocrinologist and a diabetologist.

It said that the medical board is to decide whether insulin should be administered to the Delhi chief minister and the board shall also decide on a prescribed diet and an exercise plan which should be followed.

The court added that Kejriwal will continue to be provided with home-cooked food on the condition that it will strictly be in compliance with the diet prescribed by the medical board.

Special Judge Baweja said, "Till such diet is prescribed, family to provide food to him stricken as per diet chart of his private doctor and in terms of court's order."

The court stated that there shall be no further deviations from the diet plan prescribed by the medical board.

This comes after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday said in court that Kejriwal was deliberately eating mangoes, sweets, and other high-carb food to raise his blood sugar level to build a case for his bail.

Special Counsel Zoheb Hossain for ED told Special Judge Rakesh Syal of Rouse Avenue Court that Kejriwal is doing this to create grounds for bail.

The counsel said that the Delhi chief minister has been consuming mangoes, sweets, etc., in jail irrespective of saying that he has high sugar levels.

Recent media reports also claimed that Aam Aadmi Party sources said that the Delhi CM wrote to the Tihar jail superintendent on Monday claiming he has been asking for insulin daily amid the spike in his sugar levels.
