France’s Kylian Mbappe could be on the verge of returning early to action on the field despite suffering a broken nose at the ongoing Euro 2024. Real Madrid striker Mbappe sustained a fractured nose in the clash against Switzerland when he collided with defender Kevin Danso in the 86th minute. While it was expected that Mbappe could miss the Netherlands clash, it is now likely that he could be on the bench(June 21) against the Dutch, provided he wears a protective mask on his nose.
Mbappe’s mask issue with UEFA
However, the French captain will have to be careful to avoid breaking a UEFA rule which restricts him from wearing the tri-colour mask he had used in the training on Thursday. Mbappe, having returned to training quickly used a tri-colour mask that demonstrated France’s flag. While there are no issues for him using the tri-colour mask in the training, it can’t be used during any match of the ongoing Euro 2024 in Germany.
"Medical equipment worn on the field of play must be a single colour and free of team and manufacturer identification," reads a portion of UEFA's regulations.
This means the French superstar will have to wear a single colour (more likely to be black) mask if he decides to take the field against the Netherlands on Friday. It is also reported that Mbappe won’t have surgery on his nose at least until the end of the Euro 2024.
What happens if Mbappe wears a tri-colour mask?
In case, Mbappe tries to enter the field with a tri-colour mask, he will not be permitted onto the field by the fourth official. However, if he still manages to enter the field with the mask, the referee could show him a yellow card for violating the code of conduct. In case Mbappe is shown a yellow card he will miss the final group game against Poland on Tuesday, as he already carries a yellow card to his disciplinary record.
UEFA rules also state that, if a player is booked twice at any stage of the Euro before the semifinal stage, he must serve a one-game suspension.
