Euro 2024: Dutch coach Ronald Koeman offers update on future after humiliating loss vs Austria

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said that he'll answer the question about his future if his team fails in the Round of 16 of the ongoing Euro 2024. Koeman's comments came on the back of the Netherlands' shocking 3-2 loss against Austria in the group stage on Tuesday (June 25).

The Netherlands, however, still managed to qualify for the next round but Koeman was left furious. He was asked about his future in the post-match press conference which he bluntly turned down.

"It is not a question that should be addressed now because I don't like to speak about these kinds of questions: what happens if," said Koeman.

"If it happens I will try to have a response. I am responsible for this match, but we are still in the next stage and have to play much better. If we fail, you can ask me this question [about my future] again," the former Barcelona coach added.

The coach was very critical of his side which lost the game despite equalising it twice.

"I can list quite a few mistakes. We started very badly. We did not defend well. We were not aggressive, there was a lack of pressure and we lost the ball as well, particularly at the start so it was very bad.

"The players ran a lot, but not in the positions so it was awful, very bad. We did not control the match. The match against France was reasonable as a team, but today it was appalling,"said the Netherland's coach.

Koeman, however, remained confident of putting up a better performance in the next stage and said: "It is possible with this squad. They have the qualities"

As for the match, the Netherlands conceded an own goal in the sixth minute before coming equal in the 47th minute. Austria gained the lead again with a goal in the 59th minute before the Dutch again equalized it in the 75th minute.

It was, however, Marcel Sabitzer's goal in the 80th minute which gave Austria a 3-2 win against the Dutch.
