Met Gala 2024: Alia Bhatt channels Indian princess in custom Sabyasachi saree featuring 23-foot-long train

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt marked her second Met Gala appearance wearing an intricately handcrafted Sabyasachi saree, studded with real gems. The diva's ethereal look was accentuated by a 23-foot-long train with floral detailing, glass beading and semi-precious gemstones. The 31-year-old Indian actress took the help of her longtime stylist and red carpet collaborator Anaita Shroff Adajania to curate the look, which perfectly aligns with this year's dress code, The Garden of Time.

Last year, the diva wore a Prabal Gurung gown to make her grand debut at the Met Gala. This year, however, she decided to pay an ode to her Indian roots in this gorgeous saree. And, who better than Indian courtier Sabyasachi to make her Indian princess dream come true?

“The saree's design, with its translucent, glass-like appearance is not just a nod to the ethereal quality of the garden in Ballard's story but also a tribute to the exquisite, enduring craft of sari-making,” Alia explainedahead of her red carpet appearance.

Taking visual cues from Ballard's story, Sabyasachi packed the saree with whimsy using ruffles, tassels, sequins and gemstones all over the flowing silhouette. Revealing why he decided to craft a saree for Alia, Sabyasachi told Vogue, "I am honoured to create the signature garment of India, a sari, handcrafted from techniques handed down over generations and mastered during a lifetime of effort for Alia. It represents the history and pride of Indian craftsmanship that I have dedicated my career to promoting, protecting and preserving."

On the movie front, Alia was last seen in Heart of Stone as Keya Dhawan. The film marked her Hollywood debut. The actress will be next seen in Jigra.
