Killer Mike raps about Grammy arrest in new song 'Humble Me': 'The Devil'll ruin you'

Atlanta rapper Killer Mike, 49, is making headlines once again, this time for speaking out about his recent arrest at the 2024 Grammys. The rapper released a new single titled “Humble Me” on Sunday, June 30, moments after addressing the incident during his BET Awards acceptance speech.

Killer Mike, whose real name is Michael Render, used his two-and-a-half-minute track and its accompanying black-and-white video to reflect on the shocking arrest, which occurred shortly after he won three Grammy awards in the rap categories.

In the song's third verse, he raps, “I won at the Grammys for spitting my grammar, did that for Atlanta / Did that for Atlanta, bruh, swept up like a janitor / Got sent to the slammer, bruh." The lyrics further reads, “Treat me like an animal or some kind of Hannibal, vicious and cannibal / The Devil be doing you, right when you doing it, the Devil'll ruin you.”

He continues, “Behind me Satan, I walk out the door with my head up in handcuffs with pride / ‘Cause all of my heroes wore handcuffs, the FBI shot some of them and they died.”

Killer Mike also describes “sitting there in a room full of cops like Daniel was sitting with the lions” while maintaining his faith throughout the ordeal.

The arrest took place on February 4, when Killer Mike was detained by authorities and escorted out of the Grammys in handcuffs after winning best rap song, best rap performance and best rap album during the show's pre-telecast ceremony.

In a previous statement to People, Killer Mike clarified the situation, explaining that there was confusion over which door he and his team should enter, leading to an encounter with an "over-zealous security guard." He expressed confidence that he would be cleared of any wrongdoing.

On June 26, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office confirmed that no criminal charges would be pursued against Killer Mike.

During his BET Awards acceptance speech at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, Killer Mike talked about the arrest and stated, "Technically, I was not supposed to be here. I was put in handcuffs, and I was marched out of this building. But I want to tell you — look at God, because I’m back, baby. I’m back and I’m living."

“I want to tell Black people that because of BET, I'm back. Not because of no white person calling nobody. A Black man runs this business. A Black company put this show on, and they got my Black ass back in here. Thank y’all,” he added.
