Indian 2 box office: Kamal Haasan's film sees massive drop in collection

Indian 2 is failing to keep up its opening-day momentum. The Kamal Haasan starrer which was billed as one of the most-awaited films of the veteran actor, opened to a massive opening day collection but failed to keep up after the first weekend.
The real deal begins with the first Monday collection. On its first Monday post-release, Indian 2 was able to collect Rs 3.15 crore nett (3,76,877.02 USD). The film had opened to Rs 25.6 crore(30,62,835.20 USD) on its release date.
Over the weekend, it collected Rs 18 crore nett (21,53,556.00 USD) on Saturday and Rs 15 crore nett (17,94,630.00 USD) on Sunday before wrapping up in one-digit collections on Monday (Jul15).
The long-awaited vigilante film is a sequel to the cult film Indian which came out in 1996. Kamal Haasan plays Senapathy Verma in the film.
The biggest chunk of the collection comes from the Tamil market, followed by Telugu. The third in the collection is the Hindi version of the film. The language-wise distribution of the total collections is still to be ascertained but the latter has collected the least amount of money in theatres. According to several industry reports, Indian 2 is estimated to fall deeper in the following days of the week.
Indian 2 is sequel to 1996 film Indian
Directed by Shankar, Indian 2 was among the most awaited films of the season. The sequel was considered as a comeback of sorts for the director who appeared to have hit a low period in his life following the death of writer Sujatha in 2008.
It was the Shankar-Sujatha combination that gave the Tamil industry some artistic gems. This includes films like Aishwarya Rai and Rajinikanth starrer Enthiran. The other hit films also include Indian, Mudhalvan, Boys and Sivaji: The Boss. Shankar co-wrote the script for Indian 2 with B Jeyamohan, Kabilan Vairamuthu and Lakshmi Saravana Kumar.
In the film, Kamal Haasan revivedthe role of Senapathy, called 'Indian Thatha' lovingly by fans, who fights corruption. He fights off evil with the ancient martial art practice of India, ‘varma kalai.’
Indian 2 has music composed by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman. The film also stars Siddharth, S J Suryah, Bobby Simha, Gulshan Grover and late Nedumudi Venu.
