Iconic Indiana Jones fedora fetches $630,000 at auction

A key piece of Indiana Jones history has found a new home. On August 15, a fedora, worn by Harrison Ford in the 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, wassold at an auction for a whopping $630,000, announces Propstore.

The fedora played an important role in the second instalment of the Indiana Jones series. It was worn by Ford during scenes shot in Sri Lanka, at Elstree Studios in the UK, and in the US river sequences.

The hat was also used by stunt performer Dean Ferrandini, who worked on the film's raft sequences. After Ferrandini's passing, the fedora remained in his personal collection until it was put up for auction. The winning bid included unpublished photos of Ferrandini in costume and a letter of authenticity from his wife.

The fedora's design featured a slight update from the hat Ford wore in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Costume designers Anthony Powell and Joanna Johnston collaborated with Herbert Johnson, the hat maker, to create a more tapered crown for this version. The hat’s sweatband was stamped with the initials "I J" in gold, a signature detail in the original trilogy.

The Indiana Jones fedora wasn’t the only memorabilia to have been sold at the auction. Other notable sales included a motorised Batwing from the 1989 Batman movie, which fetched $406,250, a Ghostface costume from the original Scream (1996) that sold for $270,900, and a Handbook for the Recently Deceased prop from Beetlejuice (1988) that went for $34,650.
