Friends actor Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing, found dead

Matthew Perry, who played the wisecracking Chandler Bing in the hugely popular 90s sitcom Friends, was found dead at a Los Angeles area home on Saturday.Perry was found dead in a hot tub.He was 54 years old.

It is also being reported that he died by drowning and that no drugs were found at the scene. His assistant found him and called911.

The Los Angeles Police Department toldET Online, "West LAofficers responded to [a residence] at 4:10 pmfor a Death Investigation of a male in his 50s."

Perry battled addiction to painkillers and alcohol for years. He attended rehabilitation clinics multiple times while he was part of the show. In his bookFriends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, Perrytold the readers that he went through detox 65 times.

He dedicated the book to "all of the sufferers out there" and in the prologue, wrote: "I should be dead."

As he battled drug addiction, Perry experienced several health problems including a burst colon in 2018. Thisled to a seven-hour surgery and he even had to use a colostomy bag for months after that.

Matthew Perry's early life

Matthew Perry was born in Massachusetts and was raised in Canada before he moved to Los Angeles. Other than his role in the smash-hit Friends, his acting in movies like "Fools Rush In" and "The Whole Nine Yards" was lauded by fans.

Friends, an era-defining 90s sitcom that garnered a renewed fan following in recent years among younger viewers, was about the lives of six New Yorkers navigating through life, their careers, dating, friendships and more. The series ran for 10 years and as it moved towards conclusion, Perry and his co-stars -- Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer -- were being paid USD 1 million per episode.

The actors did a Friends Reunion in the year 2021. Perry's slurred speech during the reunion episode hadstoked concerns among his fans.
