FIR filed against Nayanthara-starrer Annapoorani for allegedly hurting religious sentiments

Controversy has engulfed the latest film Annapoorani: The Goddess of Foodstarring Nayanthara and Jai. The Indian film found itself embroiled in allegations of religious insensitivity and purportedly endorsing "Love Jihad". The trouble arose from an alleged contentious dialogue regarding Lord Ram, sparking an FIR or first information report filed in Mumbai by one Ramesh Solanki.

Currently streaming on Netflix, the film directed by debutant Nilesh Krishnaa has stirred upheaval due to the claimed inclusion of the contentious dialogue.

Solanki, who raised objections against the movie, shared a statement on social media and lodged a police complaint, alleging that Annapooranipropagated "Love Jihad" and hurt "Hindu sentiments".

The FIR targeted key figures involved in the film, including actors Nayanthara and Jai, director Nilesh, along with producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, and Netflix India's Monika Shergill.

The makers of the film are yet to respond to the reports.

In Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food,Nayanthara plays an aspiring chefwho participates in the reality showIndia's Best Chef, defying her mother's advice. The film revolves around the struggles she faces while trying to fulfil her dream.

Jointly produced by Jatin Sethi and R Ravindran, the movie boasts a star-studded ensemble cast including Jai, Sathyaraj, Redin Kingsley, Suresh Chakravarthy, Renuka, and KS Ravikumar. The music is by Thaman S while Sathyan Sooryan did thecinematography.

The filmmarks Nayanthara's reunion with Jai for first time since their collaboration in the 2013 film Raja Rani.

Coming to Nayanthara's filmography, the actress made her acting debut in the 2003 film Manassinakkare as Gauri. Since then she has starred in several Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada films. She made her Hindi film debut in 2023 with Jawan, which also starred Shah Rukh Khan. Her character's name was Narmada Rai, who was an NSG officer trying to solve a case.

The film did phenomenally at the box office, netting a record-breaking Rs 750 millionon its first day of release in India alone. After its successful run at the BO, the SRK-starrer crossed the Rs 10 billion mark at the global box office.
