Nag Ashwin took inspiration from these 2 Hollywood films for Kalki 2898 AD

As netizens were busy comparing Nag Ashwin's Kalki 2898 AD to the Harry Potter franchise, the 38-year-old film director revealed in an interview that he was actually inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars. He revealed that since he loves these two films, it has subconsciously become a part of his aesthetic.

When probed further, the filmmaker clarified that Kamal Haasan's look for Supreme Yaskin was not inspired by Lord Voldemort. However, he revealed that Harshith Reddy's character Luke was taken from the popular Star Wars character, Luke Skywalker.

"We grew up watching Marvel films. I would say Guardians of the Galaxy was more of an influence than Iron Man. Definitely, Star Wars is a huge influence. I love Star Wars, so that is subconsciously a part of my aesthetic," Ashwin told Zoom.

"Our references were these old Tibetan monks, who are supposed to be 120-130 years old. Sir (Kamal Haasan) was always mentioning the portrait of Dorian Grey (from Oscar Wilde's 1890 philosophical novel The Picture of Dorian Grey). That was sir's inspiration. We didn't have many movie references for that ancient look," Ashwin added.

Lastly, he mentioned that perhaps the only Harry Potter reference in Kalki 2898 AD was Vinay Kumar's character Sirius, taken from the popular Harry Potter character Sirius Black, played by Gary Oldman.

The film grossed $22 million worldwide on its opening day. The film registered a business of Rs 5 billion (5,99,00,750.00 USD) on the 11th day of its release in India. Globally, the film has entered the Rs 8 billion (9,58,42,640.00 USD) club.

Aswani Dutt of Vyjayanthi Movies, it was shot primarily in Telugu with some scenes reshot in Hindi. The film stars Prabhas as Bhairava, Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwatthama, Kamal Haasan as Kali, and Deepika Padukone as Padma.
