The film also stars Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Yash as Ravan. Yash also serves as a co-producer of the film.

The film is being billed as India’s answer to Lord of the Rings and Avatar and is reportedly made on a whopping budget of Rs ₹4000 crore.

The film generated immense buzz over the last several months since the release of the first look last year. But no character's look had been revealed back then. While BTS photos from the sets had leaked online, the makers chose not to comment on the leaks.

The film has music by AR Rahman and legendary composer Hans Zimmer who makes his Bollywood debut with this film.

The teaser was unveiled to a select audience in Los Angeles last week in the presence of producer Namit Malhotra, director Nitesh Tiwari, and actor Ranbir Kapoor.

Director of the film, Nitesh Tiwari said, “Ramayana’s greatness lies in its emotional richness. At its heart, it is not just about good and evil, but about choices, consequences, and the weight of doing what is right. Rama’s journey is deeply human and that is what we have tried to stay true to.

Ranbir Kapoor said he learnt a lot from his character. “I don’t think I’m here to represent Rama. I’m here to learn from him. There is a simplicity and purity to him that is very rare; and trying to understand and imbibe that has been a deeply humbling experience.”

Ramayana is the second big-budget adaptation of Valmiki’s epic in Indian cinema this decade. Earlier in 2023, Om Raut’s Adipurush was also based on the same epic and starred Prabhas and Kriti Sanon in the lead. The film tanked at the box office.
