T20 World Cup: Here's how much prize money India received after becoming world champions

India came back from the brink to secure their first ICC trophy in more than 11 years by beating South Africa in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados on Saturday (Jun 29). The Men-in-Blue emerged victorious by seven runs as South Africa fell agonisingly short of the winning line.

Batting first, India posted a challenging total of 176 for 7 in the stipulated 20 overs after captain Rohit Sharma won the crucial toss. Virat Kohli (76) held the innings together while useful knocks from Axar Patel, Shivam Dubeand Hardik Pandya allowed India to post the highest total in a T20 WC final.

How much prize money did India receive for winning the T20 World Cup?

Prior to the tournament, ICC, the global governing body of cricket and its chief executive, Geoff Allardice had stated that the 2024 edition was historic, primarily due to the bumper prize money on offer for the players and the teams.

“This event is historic in so many ways, so it is fitting that the prize money for players reflects that. Hundreds of millions of fans around the world will be entertained by the players in what we’re hoping to be an Out of This World event," said Allardice.

As per ICC, India, the winner of the marquee tournament, received at least $2.45 million (Rs 20.42 crore) in cash money.

How much prize money did South Africa receive as the runners-up?

South Africa, playing their first final of a World Cup, managed to earn a whopping $1.28 million (Rs 10.67 crore) for their unbeaten run up until the summit clash.

How much did the losing semifinalists receive?

Both England and Afghanistan walked away with $787,500 (Rs 6.56 crore), despite missing out on a final berth.

Teams that did not advance past the Super 8 stage received $382,500 each while those finishing between ninth and 12th place pocketed $247,500 each.

As for the lower end of the table, teams finishing between 13th and 20th received $225,000 each.

India get the monkey off the back

The Indian team had been knocking on the doors of an ICC trophy for the better part of the last decade. However, the ultimate glory eluded them.

India came into the T20 World Cup 2024 on the back of a crushing loss in the final of the 50-over World Cup at home against Australia last year. While not many had predicted that India would go the distance in the tournament, the team led by Rohit Sharma finished the competition unbeaten and took home the trophy as well as the invincible tag.
