T20 World Cup 2024: Rashid Khan terms Afghanistan's win over New Zealand as 'one of the greatest'

Afghanistan’s star man Rashid Khan has termed his side’s win against New Zealand as one of the greatest as his team pulled out yet another upset in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the early hours of Saturday (June 8) morning. Afghanistan beat New Zealand by 84 runs and now sit a win away from reaching the next stage of the tournament. According to Rashid, it is one of the prominent wins for his team considering his side has rarely won big matches in the T20 edition of the World Cup.

Rashid terms win as greatest

"Definitely I think it's one of the greatest victories for us, especially in T20. You know we haven't had those victories in T20 World Cups. We had in ODI, but in T20 I feel like this was one of the best the performances by the guys, and it's not just about a single guy you know winning the game it's a great team effort the way Gurbaz and Ibrahim started the innings," Rashid said after Afghanistan’s historic victory.

Having posted 159/6 in their 20 overs, the BlackCaps were bowled out for 75 inside 16 overs and Afghanistan registered an 84-run win at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. The win adds to the famous victory over Pakistan in the ODI World Cup in October which also helped them qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Fazalhaq Farooqi (17/4) and Rashid (17/4) were the stars of the show for Afghanistan as they both ran riot with the ball. Interestingly, only two New Zealand batters - Glenn Phillips (18) and Matt Henry (12) got into double figures with Extras (10) being the next productive source of runs for the 2021 T20 World Cup runners-up.

The win also saw Afghanistan reach four points from two matches having earlier defeated debutants Uganda by 125 runs. With West Indies and Papua New Guinea to play in the remaining two matches of the T20 World Cup group stage, the Asian side needs only one more to reach the Super Eightstage.
