Don't want to...: Rohit Sharma on new India coach Gautam Gambhir's approach

Rohit Sharma-led India have commenced the three ODIs versus hosts Sri Lanka, in Colombo, on Friday (Aug 2). Since Rohit's last international appearance, a lot has changed in Indian cricket. He was last seen on the 22-yard cricket strip during India's T20 World Cup 2024 final win versus South Africa, in Barbados on June 29. Following the victory, he -- along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja -- stepped aside from T20Is. Coming back into the Indian teamfor the ODIs versus Sri Lanka, Rohit is now working with new head coach Gautam Gambhir -- who took over from Rahul Dravid after the T20 WC triumph. On being asked about the new coach's approach, and new T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav after their recent 3-0 series win over the Islanders, Rohit gave an interesting reply.

In the pre-match presser, Rohit said about Surya,"It's early days (in his captaincy); I don't want to talk too much about it. He has done a great job, and let him continue doing it. We start jumping into things (judgement) quite quickly, regardless of wins or losses. Let him do things consistently, and then we can talk about it. It's definitely a good start for them in that format. They played well as a unit, which is what Team India is all about. I'm sure they are heading in the right direction."

On the new coach, Rohit opined, "Gautam Gambhir has played a lot of cricket and he has been involved with franchise cricket also before. Obviously, it is going to be different from the previous support staff. Ravi Shastri was there before Rahul Dravid joined the team, every individual works differently. I know Gambhir for a very long time and we have played a little bit of cricket together. He has a very clear mind and knows what he wants from the team."

Rohit-Gambhir's first assignment is the three ODIs versus Sri Lanka in the island nation. Post that, the two will shift their focus on India's gruelling home season before the ICC Champions Trophy, early next year.
