The 30-share benchmark opened higher and scaled a high of 34,278.63 in early deals after positive GDP data for the third quarter. According to the official data released after market hours yesterday, the GDP growth rate rose to a five-quarter high growth of 7.2 per cent in the October-December quarter on good showing by key sectors like manufacturing.

The core sector growth rate also picked up momentum to touch 6.2 per cent in January.

Stocks however slipped into the negative zone with the BSE Sensex touching a low of 34,015.79 due to continued selling in global markets.

The 30-share barometer settled at 34,046.94, down 137.10 points, or 0.40 per cent as its 20 constituents led by ICICI Bank and SBI ended in the red.

The 50-issue NSE Nifty too lost 34.50 points, or 0.33 at 10,458.35 after shuttling between 10,525.50 and 10,447.15.

For the week, the flagship Sensex recorded a fall of 95.21 points, or 0.27 per cent, while the NSE Nifty lost 32.70 points, or 0.31 per cent.

&quot;Markets traded dull and ended lower amid mixed local cues. In the Sensex pack, ICICI Bank suffered the most by 2.63 per cent, followed by country&#39;s largest state-run SBI 2.31 per cent.

In contrast, Coal India, IndusInd Bank, Hindustan Unilever, M&amp;M, Kotak Bank, ONGC, Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Maruti Suzui managed to end in the positive terrain and cushioned the fall.

The broader markets too were under selling pressure from investors with the BSE mid-cap index falling by 0.61 per cent, while small-cap index lost 0.24 per cent.

Globally, Japan&#39;s Nikkei fell 1.56 per cent, while Singapore shed 0.24 per cent. Shanghai Composite Index, however, was up 0.44 per cent and Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng rose 0.65 per cent.

Telecom operator Aircel on Wednesday said it has filed for bankruptcy as the company has been facing &quot;troubled times&quot; in &quot;highly financially stressed&quot; industry.

In a statement, Aircel said that intense competition following the disruptive entry of a new player, legal and regulatory challenges, high level of unsustainable debt and increased losses had together caused significant &quot;negative business and reputational impact&quot; on the company.

&quot;The Board of Directors of the Corporate Debtor today announced that they have filed an application under Section 10 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016 for undertaking Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process for the respective companies: Aircel Cellular, Dishnet Wireless, Aircel Ltd,&quot; the the statement said.

Sources said that the filing was made in National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Mumbai.

The company statement also noted that efforts to merge wireless business with another operator did not yield any results and had ultimately lapsed in September 2017.

&quot;Post detailed discussions with the financial lenders and shareholders, the company could not reach consensus with respect to restructuring of its debt and funding. Despite these discussions and the invoking of a Strategic Debt Restructuring scheme in January 2018...No agreement could be reached,&quot; Aircel said.

The company also said it believes that in the current circumstances, resolution process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code is an &quot;appropriate recourse&quot;.

&quot;The Company would like to emphasise that CIRP is not a proceeding for liquidation, rather is a process to find best possible resolution for the current situation and that would be in the best interest of everyone (vendors, distributors, employees, etc) to protect and preserve the value of the company and manage the operations,&quot; it added.

Infosys, UPL, GAIL, Cipla were up about one percent.

HPCL, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, Adani Ports, and Vedanta were down about two to three percent.

The market extended losses in opening trade, tracking weakness in global peers, and due to selling pressure in banking and financials.

Rupee hits three-month low

India might have regained the status of the world&#39;s fastest-growing major economy in the October-December quarter, driven by higher government spending and a pick-up in manufacturing and services.

The median in a Reuters poll on annual growth in the December quarter was 6.9 percent, the best pace in 2017. Forecasts ranged from 6.4 percent to 7.3 percent.

The benchmark BSE Sensex gained over 132 points to 34,578.39 in early trade today, rising for the third straight session today on buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) amid strong global cues. 
 
Investors are also eyeing Q3 GDP data, to be released tomorrow. Market sentiment was bolstered after a Morgan Stanley report said India&#39;s economic recovery is expected to have gathered momentum and GDP growth for the December quarter is likely to have accelerated to 7 per cent, broker said.

Benchmark BSE Sensex advanced by 132.64 points, or 0.38 per cent, to 34,578.39 in early session today.

The gauge has gained 626.25 points in the previous two sessions.

All sectoral indices were trading in the green, led by gains in oil and gas, consumer durables, auto, banking, power, PSU, metals, FMCG and healthcare counters.

The NSE Nifty50 reclaimed the 10,600-mark, by rising 32.65, or 0.30 per cent, to 10,615.25.

On a net basis, DIIs bought shares worth Rs 1,409.45 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,119.51 crore yesterday, provisional data released by stock exchanges showed.

Top gainers included Yes Bank, RIL, ONGC, TCS, Dr Reddy&#39;s, Asian Paints, M&amp;M, Wipro, HDFC Bank and Coal India, rising up to 1.75 per cent.

On February 14, the bank had detected the fraud wherein billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi and associates had allegedly acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking (LoUs) from one of the branches of the PNB for overseas credit from other Indian lenders.

&quot;We have to inform that quantum of reported unauthorised transactions can increase by&nbsp;$204.25 million (approximately),&quot; the filing said.

At the current exchange rate, the amount comes to around Rs 1,323 crore.&nbsp;

China&#39;s Huawei is forging closer commercial ties with big telecom operators across Europe and Asia, putting the company in prime position to lead the global race for next-generation 5G networks despite US&nbsp;allegations it poses a security threat.

Huawei&#39;s dominant position in China - set to become the world&#39;s biggest 5G market by far - is well-documented. However, it has also been making in-roads in the rest of world to compete with rivals Ericsson and Nokia in several lucrative markets, including countries that are longstanding US&nbsp;allies.

5G networks, now in the testing stage, will rely on denser arrays of small antennas and the cloud to offer data speeds up to 50 or 100 times faster than current 4G networks and serve as critical infrastructure for a range of industries.

Deals to start building 5G networks are still largely a year away, but Huawei has signed 25 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with telecom operators to trial 5G equipment, a Reuters review of company reports and announcements found.

These MoUs - pre-cursors to potential commercial contracts - include agreements with Britain&#39;s BT, Bell Canada (BCE), France&#39;s Orange Germany&#39;s Deutsche Telekom and global player Vodafone.&nbsp;

Huawei lags behind Sweden&#39;s Ericsson, with 38 MoUs, and Finland&#39;s Nokia, with 31, according to the data, which does not include deals that have not been made public.

However, the Chinese company&#39;s existing partnerships with operators could give it an extra edge; as of 2016, Huawei said it had supplied more than half of the 537 4G networks globally and 59 of the 90 4.5G networks - an intermediate step before 5G.

&quot;Existing network footprint is important because operators still need to maintain their legacy ... networks and could save money by using the same vendors,&quot; said Stefan Pongratz, a top industry analyst with research firm Dell&#39;Oro.

Huawei also has the home advantage: the firm and smaller, domestic-focused peer ZTE are each guaranteed about a third of China&#39;s 5G network contracts, under Beijing&#39;s policy, while foreign players have to compete for slivers of the market.

By 2025, 1.2 billion people worldwide are set to have access to 5G networks - a third of them in China, according to the GSMA, a global trade group of nearly 800 mobile operators.&nbsp;

There are however potential risks ahead; Huawei, like its rivals, has spent billions of dollars developing 5G network technology, there are no guarantees about when operators around the world will adopt the new technology.&nbsp;

Many cash-strapped operators want to see significant consumer and business demand before allocating capital, something out of Huawei&#39;s control. Some emerging markets have yet to adopt 4G, putting major 5G moves at least a decade off.&nbsp;

Triple the size

Unlisted Huawei is triple the size of either Nokia and Ericsson in terms of its annual revenue, which totalled about $92 billion last year, half of it from China. It sold 32 percent of global mobile radio access gear - antennas and base stations - in the last quarter, against Ericsson&#39;s 30 percent and Nokia&#39;s 25 percent, according to market research firm Dell&#39;Oro.&nbsp;

Ericsson has been under heavy pressure to cut costs in recent years at a time of dwindling profits, while Nokia has had to integrate multiple acquisitions in its networks business.&nbsp;

Nokia said it was confident its broad 5G portfolio, which also includes software and services to manage networks, would allow it to win a bigger slice of the telecoms market.&nbsp;

Ericsson said its longstanding ties with customers and advanced 5G patent portfolio would keep it competitive. &quot;All our customers are looking at 5G,&quot; a spokesman said.

Huawei&#39;s 5G MoUs include non-binding agreements with big telecom operators in South Korea, Japan and Australia, Italy, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, on top of Britain, Germany, France and Canada.&nbsp;

Potential commercial benefits aside, these agreements indicate that many countries allied to the United States do not share Washington&#39;s security concerns.

A bill introduced in the US&nbsp;Senate earlier this month would bar equipment from Huawei from any US&nbsp;government networks to prevent Chinese spying. A leaked presentation from a US&nbsp;National Security Council staffer earlier this year suggested the US&nbsp;government build its own 5G network - a proposal that was widely ridiculed by industry experts.

China's Huawei set to lead global charge to 5G networks

SEBI on Friday asked HDFC Bank to identify individuals, including bank officials responsible for the leakage of its financial results, as the markets regulator has found inadequate controls at the lender as &#39;prima facie&#39; reason for the leak.

In the high-profile leakage case where sensitive financial details of various companies, including HDFC Bank, got leaked on WhatsApp before their formal announcement, SEBI virtually censured the top private sector lender and asked it to strengthen the systems and controls to check any such leak in future.

&quot;HDFC Bank shall strengthen its processes/ systems/ controls forthwith to ensure that such instances of leakage of unpublished price sensitive information do not recur in future,&quot; the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said in an order.

SEBI has also directed the bank to submit a report on the present systems and controls and how they have been strengthened, who are the persons responsible for monitoring such systems and the periodicity of monitoring.

&quot;HDFC Bank shall conduct an internal inquiry into the leakage of unpublished price sensitive information relating to its financial figures including NPA (non-performing asset) results and take appropriate action against those responsible for the same, in accordance with law,&quot; SEBI said.

HDFC Bank has to complete the inquiry within three months and file a report to SEBI within seven days thereafter, the regulator said.&nbsp;

A Japanese cryptocurrency exchange undergoing checks by regulators has said a system failure let investors briefly trade a digital currency for zero yen, highlighting security concerns about such assets after last month&#39;s cyber heist at Coincheck Inc.

Zaif, an exchange run by Osaka-based Tech Bureau Corp, said on Tuesday a problem in its price calculation system allowed seven customers to trade a cryptocurrency with no yen value for around 20 minutes on February&nbsp;16th.

It was unclear if the customers realised they were trading the digital asset for zero yen, or were somehow blindsided for a brief moment.

The exchange said it had corrected the customers&#39; balances to account for any trades of the cryptocurrency made at zero yen. It added that it had resolved the issue with six of the customers and was still doing so with the remaining one.

Zaif did not give further details, or identify the cryptocurrency affected by the system error. Tech Bureau officials were not immediately available for further comment.

The incident comes after hackers stole $530 million in digital money from Coincheck last month, sparking checks by regulators of Japan&#39;s other exchange operators, including Tech Bureau.

The Financial Services Agency launched on-site checks at Tech Bureau because it saw the exchange as potentially vulnerable to cyber-attacks, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Feb. 9.

Japan last year rolled out the world&#39;s first system to oversee cryptocurrency exchanges, in a bid to protect customers, stamp out illegal uses of cryptocurrencies as it sought to nurture a young and promising sector.

The survey, which was conducted between June to August 2017, covered 60,000 individuals from urban India across 170 cities and 15,000 individuals across 750 villages in the rural area.&nbsp;

Some of the key highlights from the report are stated below:

1. Urban India witnessed a growth of 9.66 per cent from December 2016.

2. Urban India had around 295 million internet users as on December 2017.

3. Rural India witnessed a growth of 14.11 per cent from December 2016.

4. Around 186 million internet users were reported in rural India as on December 2017.

5. 86 per cent internet users in urban India access it for online communication, 85 per cent for entertainment, 70 per cent for social networking, 44 per cent online finance and transactions and 35 per cent for online services.

6. For rural India, entertainment is top content for 58 per cent internet users followed by online communication for 56 per cent, social networking 49 per cent, online services 35 per cent and online finance and transaction 16 per cent.

7. Students and youngsters account for around 60 per cent of the total internet use in India.

8. An estimated 182.9 million or 62 per cent access internet daily in urban India.

9. 98 million users, 53 per cent, in rural India access internet daily.&nbsp;

10.&nbsp;The overall internet penetration, as of December 2017, was recorded at 35 per cent of total population.
