After closing at a record low, Sensex, Nifty recovered in opening trade on value buying in frontline stocks led by banking, auto and metal.
Sensex was up by 238.41 points trading at 34,434.35 and the Nifty was up 89.50 points at 10,587.75.
The broader NSE Nifty ended 1.58 percent lower at 10,498.25, while the BSE index fell 1.61 percent to 34,195.94. Both indexes had earlier fallen as much as 3.6 percent.
The markets had fallen over 1,000 in early morning trade on Tuesday as strong selling pressure dragged down all the Sensex and the Nifty components.
Tata Motors, India Bulls Housing Finance, Axis Bank and Hindalco were the biggest losers in the opening trade.
The rupee too fell to 64.38 against US dollar, as against Monday's close of 64.06, a fall of about 32 paisa.
The fall came as Wall Street stocks plunged leading to large-scale bloodbath in Asian stocks.
Tokyo led the collapse throughout the region in early trade, diving more than five per cent. Hong Kong was down almost four per cent at one point, Sydney 3 per cent on Tuesday morning.
