Microsoft increases data protection responsibilities for European Union

Microsoftsaid on Monday it was updating theprivacyprovisions of its commercial cloud contracts afterEuropean regulators found its deals withEuropean Union institutions failed to protectdatain line withEUlaw.

The EDPS, theEU'sdatawatchdog, opened an investigation in April to assess whetherMicrosoft's contracts with theEuropean Commission and otherEUinstitutions metdataprotection rules. It raised concerns about compliance in October.

In a statement on its website addressing the issue,Microsoftsaid: "We will increase ourdataprotection responsibilities for a subset of processing thatMicrosoftengages in when we provide enterprise services."

The company, the only major cloud provider to offer suchtermsin theEuropean Economic Area and beyond, expects to offer the new provisions to public sector and enterprise customers in early 2020.
