
Battery-as-a-Service or BaaS is a unique ownership program which allows customers to buy an electric vehicle without paying the upfront cost of its battery. They have to pay only for the usage of the battery depending on the per kilometer cost fixed by the manufacturer. Since battery constitutes massively to the price of an electric vehicle, this flexible ownership program makes buying an electric vehicle economical. Buyers are only required to pay a nominal fee for the battery usage, which is quite lower than the per kilometer cost of conventional fuels are petrol and diesel.
MG Windsor EV launched with BaaS model
JSW MG Motor India recently launched its third electric vehicle in the country, called the Windsor EV. The unique selling proposition of this crossover electric vehicle is that it comes with BaaS ownership model, allowing users to pay for battery as per usage. The electric vehicle has been priced at a starting and introductory price of INR 10 lakhs while the cost for using the battery will be INR 3.5 per kilometer. The cost for the battery rental is only 40% of the per kilometer cost of traditional fossil fuel powered vehicles.
Additionally, MG is also offering the one year of free public charging for the owners of Windsor EV, making it easier for them to power up their EVs anytime and anywhere. The vehicle promises a range of 331 kilometers on a single charge while the battery can be juiced up to full in just 40 minutes at any DC fast charger.
Benefits of BaaS model
BaaS ownership model could prove to be a game-changer in the electric vehicle segment as it will help cut down the upfront purchasing price of electric vehicles. This will in turn encourage more people to buy the battery-powered vehicles without worrying about their budgets. With more and more electric models coming with these easy-to-buy models, EV adoption in India could get a boost and take the country closer to the 2070 national goal of net zero emissions.
