Tesla's California car registrations fall for third straight quarter

As per latest data, registrations of Tesla electric cars in California, the company’s biggest market, tumbled 24% in the April-June quarter, the third straight quarterly dip. This has provided a competition pressure that is increasing over time to the EV manufacturer. Cutting on interest rates and increasing competition have equally triggered the consumers to shift to other cheaper means of electric vehicles which are hybrid cars.

Potential customers in the United States have been hesitant to buy Tesla’s electric cars; owing to Musk’s unreserved persona. Specifically, Musk supporting Republicans and giving outspoken statements created issues for Tesla and its brand image, especially in Liberal places such as California that generated 10% of the company’s worldwide deliveries.

Tesla's registrations in California fell to 52,211 vehicles in the second quarter, as reported by the California New Car Dealers Association. Despite a slight 1.3% decline in the battery electric vehicle market overall, hybrid vehicle sales surged by 22% in California during the same period. A report noted, "Tesla's appeal appears to be diminishing, signaling potential challenges for the direct-to-consumer automaker."

From January to June, Tesla's registrations in California plummeted by 17%, while distant competitors such as Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and Rivian all saw double-digit percentage increases in sales. Although Tesla's Model Y crossover remains the top-selling model in the state, its market share dropped to 53.4% in the first half of the year, down from 64.6% compared to the same period last year.

Later in 2021, Tesla changed its headquarters from California to Texas. Later, Musk also stated that other companies associated with him, such as SpaceX, will also relocate from California to Texas because of a conflict with the governor Gavin Newsom and legislative measures.

Tesla Motors is due to release its earnings for the period up to the end of June on Tuesday. This is actually rather surprising given that, although Daimler was able to deliver more cars in the second quarter than Wall Street expected it to, this figure was actually down year-on-year.
