All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Sonia Gandhi on Friday (May 17) made an emotional appeal to the people of Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli, urging them to accept her son, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with open arms, just as they accepted her.

She further asserted during her very first public address amid the ongoing Lok Sabha election campaign that Rahul "won't disappoint them".

Recalling the 'age-old' roots of the Gandhi family with the people of the constituency in the northern state, the AICC chief expressed gratitude to the residents of the city.

"I am very happy that I got the opportunity to come among you after so long...You all gave me the opportunity to serve you as an MP, this is the biggest treasure of my life. For the last 100 years, the roots of our family are connected to the soil of this land. This relation is as pure as Ganga Maa. It started with the farmer's agitation of Awadh and Raebareli," Sonia Gandhi said addressing the public meeting.

The grand old party lost its other bastion Amethi to BJP in the year 2019. BJP has nominated incumbent MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani to contest the seat in the current elections, whereas the Congress has fielded its long-time loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma.

Polling on both the seats will be held on May 20, which is the fifth phase of the ongoing elections.

An Air India flight bound for Bengaluru on Friday (May 17) evening returned to the New Delhi airport due to a suspected fire in the aircraft's air conditioning unit, news agency PTI reported citing sources.

The AI 807 aircraft with 175 passengers on board made a safe landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in India's capital.

As per the reports, the flight was forced to land because of a suspected fire in the air conditioning unit.

After an emergency was declared, the flight made a safe precautionary landing at around 6.40 pm IST on Friday.

The airline is at present making alternative arrangements for the passengers to fly to the southern city of Bengaluru, said an official.

According to the flight tracking website flightradar24, the flight was operated with an A321 aircraft.

"The aircraft, carrying around 180 passengers, suffered damage to its nose and a tyre near the landing gear. Despite the collision, all passengers and crew on board are reported to be safe," news agency ANI quoted an airport official as saying.

Airport officials stated that "the passengers were immediately deplaned and arrangements were made for an alternative flight to Delhi."

Following this, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also ordered a probe into the incident so as to determine the cause of the collision.

As per the preliminary reports, the tug truck which is used to manoeuvre the plane on the ground, hit the aircraft at the time of the taxiing process.

The presence of the river would unveil the mystery behind how the 31 pyramids were constructed in line alongside a now barren desert strip in the Nile Valley between 4,700 and 3,700 years ago.

The strip in the vicinity of the Egyptian capital of Memphis comprises the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is the only structure remaining out of the seven wonders of the ancient world, along with the Khafre, Cheops and Mykerinos pyramids.

The international team of researchers dubbed the river branch Ahramat, called "pyramids" in Arabic, and&nbsp;made use of radar satellite imagery in order to map it.

Radar gave them the "unique ability to penetrate the sand surface and produce images of hidden features including buried rivers and ancient structures," Ghoneim said.

A study conducted on the field and cores of sediment obtained from the site confirmed the presence of the river, as per the study in the journal Communications Earth &amp; Environment.

Long-lost Nile river branch extremely crucial in construction of Egyptian Pyramids, reveals study

India's Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday (May 17) filed a chargesheet against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as well as its supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is out of jail on interim bail, in the money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam.

This is the very first time that a sitting chief minister and a national political party have been named as accused in a money laundering case.

As per news agency PTI, the prosecution in the case filed before the special court has sought the accused to be charged under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

"We have direct evidence that Kejriwal stayed in a seven-star hotel, whose bills were partly paid by an accused in the case," Additional Solicitor General S V Raju told the Supreme Court on Thursday (May 16).

He further added that Kejriwal played an important role in formulating the Delhi excise policy, which has now been scrapped.

This is the eighth chargesheet filed by the federal probe agency in the case. &nbsp;

ED earlier said that Kejriwal was the "kingpin and key conspirator" of the Delhi excise "scam".&nbsp;

But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022.

The investigating agencies have said that the profit margins of wholesalers were increased from 5 per cent to 12 per cent under the new policy.&nbsp;

The agencies have alleged that the new policy resulted in cartelisation and those ineligible for liquor licences were favoured for monetary benefits.

Delhi liquor policy case: ED files chargesheet against Kejriwal, names AAP as accused

This is the latest in a spate of similar incidents where Pyongyang has fired off cruise missiles, tactical rockets and hypersonic weapons in recent months which the country claims is their drive aimed at upgrading the defence system.

Earlier, South Korea and the United States alleged that Pyongyang was supplying arms to Russia, which they stated would be in violation of several UN sanctions that were imposed on both countries.

Seoul's army on Friday said that it had detected the launch of what it termed as "several flying objects presumed to be short-range ballistic missiles" into waters off North Korea's coast from the country's eastern Wonsan area.

The missiles reportedly travelled a distance of around 300 kilometres (186 miles), said the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He added that the military had "strengthened vigilance and surveillance in preparation for additional launches".

The launches also come just hours after Kim Jong Un's influential sister Kim Yo Jong denounced the US and South Korea over their repeated accusations, claiming that the nuclear-armed Pyongyang was sending its weapons to Russia for use in its offensive against Ukraine.

She alleged that Seoul and Washington were "misleading the public opinion" with their claims.

This came after North Korea's foreign ministry condemned what it described as an increased surveillance of North Korea by US allies under the pretence of monitoring the UN sanctions violations.&nbsp;

"The Democratic People's Republic Of Korea (DPRK) will take necessary measures to firmly defend the sovereignty and security of the state on the basis of a rigorous analysis of the negative influence being caused by the grave acts of some countries including UK, Canada, Germany, France, New Zealand and Australia taking part in the so-called 'activities of monitoring sanctions against DPRK,'" said North Korea's foreign ministry in a statement.

North Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles after Kim's sister denies supplying arms to Russia

Swedish police have cordoned off an area in Stockholm after a patrol heard suspected gunshots, they said on Friday, with the Israeli embassy located in the closed-off area.

Police declined to comment on whether there was a link between the incident and the Israeli embassy, Swedish news agency TT reported.

"A police patrol at Strandvagen in Stockholm heard bangs and suspected there had been a shooting," police said on their website shortly after midnight, adding that the affected area lay between the capital's Djurgarden Bridge, its Nobel Park and the Oscar Church.

"In connection with the ongoing forensic investigation, findings have been made that strengthen the suspicions that a shooting took place," they said.

Police said an investigation into suspected serious weapons crime had been launched and that they held several people in connection with the incident.

A prosecutor's office spokesperson later in the day said none of them remained in custody.

The Israeli embassy could not immediately be reached for comment.

In another incident concerning the safety of passengers, a Boeing plane was forced to make an emergency landing after a fire was spotted in one of the engines when taking off.

With 450 passengers and 18 crew members on board, the Garuda Indonesia plane departed for Medina in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday (May 15).

The Garuda Indonesia released a statement saying that the Boeing 747-400 aircraft immediately returned to the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport after “fire was observed in one of the engines”.

The statement added that no one was injured in the incident.

It was scheduled to land back in Indonesia's Makassar.

Several passengers on the aircraft were due to take part in Mecca's annual Hajj pilgrimage.

“The captain discovered that one of the engines was on fire and immediately decided that further inspection was necessary to determine whether the engine was faulty," Garuda Indonesia president Irfan Setiaputra said.

“The decision was made immediately after the aircraft took off,” he added.

The airline stated that they had provided the passengers affected in the incident with accommodation.

Indonesia: Boeing plane bound for Medina makes emergency landing after engine catches fire

The new Dutch government, which is led by nationalist Geert Wilders' PVV party, intends to opt out of the European Union migration rules.

"An opt-out clause for European asylum and migration policies will be submitted as soon as possible to the European Commission," the coalition says in its pact.

Wilders asserted that this would make the Netherlands a place that the asylum seekers are less attracted to, adding that "people in Africa and the Middle East will start thinking they might be better off elsewhere".

"This legislation will be applied and the commission will play its role in making sure it is."

The Dutch coalition parties said that the entry of foreign students to Dutch universities would become more stringent and that labour migration would also be restrained.

Archaeologists claim to have uncovered Alexander the Great's bathing quarters and combat gymnasium at the Aigai Palace in the northern part of Greece.

The discovery was first revealed in the conclusive episode of the Channel 4 series “Bettany Hughes’ Treasures of the World.”

Positioned in the heart of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, the magnificent Aigai palace is spread across 15,000 square metres and exceeds even the magnificence of the Parthenon.

Constructed during Philip II's reign, the palace comprises courtyards, temples, sanctuaries, a theatre, a palaestra (boxing school), and tombs.

“There’s a significant drain carved into the rock, along with a communal bathroom. This area is believed to be where Alexander the Great would have bathed alongside his companions, including his renowned favourite, Hephaestion, and the multitude of young men who accompanied him during campaigns and later vied for control of his empire following his demise," said Bettany Hughes, host of the series, about the discovery.

Alexander’s favourite Hephaestion was also known as his second-in-command and used to also go on trips with him.
