Woman seriously injured in wolf attack at French zoo; probe launched

A 37-year-old woman in France was seriously injured after she was attacked bythree wolves in a zoo outside Paris on Sunday (June 23).Speaking to the news agency AFP, a source familiar with the case said that the woman wasbitten "on the neck, the calf and the back" at the Thoiry Zoo. Her identity has not been revealed. An investigation has been launched.

As perVersailles' Chief ProsecutorMaryvonne Caillibotte, the woman'slife was in danger. However, a second source familiar with the case said thather injuries were no longer life-threatening.

Woman went on early morning jogwhen she was attacked

The woman went on a jog early Sunday morning after she spent the nightwith her family in the safari-style lodge at the zoo. Speaking to AFP,Wow Safari Thiory Chief Executive Officer (CEO)Christelle Bercheny said that thewoman had "crossed the American reserve on foot", a place normally "only accessible by car."

Bercheny said that there were signs reminding people of the "rules of survival" to be followed in the park.

"The behaviour of the animals in the reserves is that of animals in freedom or semi-liberty," she added, referring to their reaction to the intrusion of a human.

First responders got to scene 'very quickly'

Chief ProsecutorCaillibotte said that the 37-year-oldended up in the safari zone, which is supposed to be restricted to cars. "That's where she was attacked by three wolves," she added.

It was not clear "whether she made a mistake or the trail wasn't clearly marked", she further said.

The chief prosecutor also pointed out that first responders got to the scene "very quickly," and the wolveswere "moved away, then returned to their area."

The second source familiar with the case told the news agency that thewoman must have got through "security systems, a trench and an electric fence supposed to keep the animals in."
