The defector was shot at least six times as tried to escape to Panmunjom truce village on November 13.
The man who is reportedly a low ranking soldier was shot in the shoulder and elbow and was picked up bleeding on the south side of the border known as the Joint Security Area (JSA). The UN had called it a serious "breach of the 1953 ceasefire".
No tourists were in the Joint Security Area at the time and there was no exchange of gunfire between the two sides.
Meanwhile, the defector who is being treated at a hospital in Seoul has regained consciousness, reports said.
He was still "depressed" and would spend several more days in intensive care, AFP reported.
"As the patient is showing signs of depression due to intense psychological stress following two rounds of major surgeries, he will undergo tests for post-traumatic stress disorder," doctor Lee Cook-Jong told reporters.
"It's not like the patient will open his eyes and walk out of the hospital after surgery as you see in movies," he said.
UN Command spokesmansaid UNC has requested a meeting with North Korean officials to discuss measures to prevent future such violations along the demilitarized zone.
