War crimes accused takes 'poison' in Hague dock
It was the last judgement by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), established by the United Nations in 1993, before it closes next month
The United Nations judges, on Wednesday, commenced their verdict over appeals of the six former Bosnian Croat political and military leaders for war crimes done during the break-up of Yugoslavia.
One of the leaders, Slobodan Praljak, 72, was up before the court - who was previously charged with 20 years imprisonment in 2013.
According to reports, Praljak, during his hearing, stood up and swallowed a glass of liquid which was later found to be poison.
After hearing his final verdict, on Wednesday, Praljak announced that he had consumed poison.
“I just drank poison,” he said. “I am not a war criminal. I oppose this conviction.”
Following the incident, the judges immediately called off the proceedings, media reports said.
An ambulance was immediately called to the court.
Reports said Slobodan Praljak was being treated by medics and he was alive.
