After US launched an attack on the on Venezuelan capital Caracas on Saturday (Jan 3), Venezuela requested an urgent UN Security Council meeting, announced Foreign Minister Yvan Gil. "In response to the criminal aggression perpetrated by the US government against our nation, we have requested an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council, the body responsible for upholding international law," Gil said on Telegram.
"No cowardly attack will prevail against the strength of this people, who will emerge victorious," he further said.
At least seven explosions rang out and low-flying aircraft swept through the capital early Saturday. Explosions in Caracas forced people to look for shelter on the streets, while several took to social media to share videos and talk about the blasts they had been a witness to.
Just after the attack US President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States carried out “large scale” strikes against Venezuela. He also said that he has “captured” the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and flown out of the country. He added that the operation was done in “conjunction” with the US law enforcement.
Taking to Truth Social Trump wrote, “The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country. This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP."
