Usha Vance, the highly accomplished lawyer wife of Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance

Republican senator JD Vance was named the party's vice-president nominee at the Republican Convention in Milwaukee, on Monday (Jul15). He is married to Usha Chilukuri Vance, an Indian-American lawyer who has now decided to leave her law firm after her husband was named Donald Trump's running mate. Usha stood beside her husband as the first-term senator from Ohio was nominated amid loud applause and a voice vote.

Usha Vance was born Usha Chilukuri and grew up in San Diego, California. She is the daughter of Indian immigrants. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Yale University.

Usha has quit her law firm following the announcement of her husband being the VP nominee. "Usha has informed us she has decided to leave the firm. Usha has been an excellent lawyer and colleague, and we thank her for her years of work and wish her the best in her future career," a spokesperson for Munger, Tolles & Olsen told ABC News.

Usha's bio on the law firm's website says that she has been involved in "complex civil litigation and appeals in a wide variety of sectors, including higher education, local government, entertainment, and technology, including semiconductors." The bio has now been taken down.

She has been a law clerk for two Supreme Court justices – Brett Kavanaugh, during his time at the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and Chief Justice John Roberts.

Usha Vance's academic details

Her academic credentials also include a bachelor's degree in history from Yale University and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge. JD Vance has often called his wife a key part of his success. The two dated when they were at the law school together at Yale University and got married in 2014. JD Vance's memoir describes her as his “Yale spirit guide". He credits her for helping him navigate life at the elite university where they met. The couple have three children.

Ushaserved as executive development editor of the Yale Law Journal and managing editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology, according to her biography page. She also taught American history as a Yale-China Teaching Fellow at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou.

Her fancy list of achievements doesn't end here. Usha is a trustee of the Washington National Opera and has also been the secretary of the board of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. She has also served on the board of the Gates Cambridge Alumni Association.
