US presidential election: Trump files for New Hampshire primary ahead of campaign rally

Former United States President and Republican Donald Trump signed up for the New Hampshire presidential primary on Monday (Oct 23) becoming the first person who has served as a president to file such paperwork in person more than once.

Trump also spoke about who he thinks should be the next speaker of the US House of Representatives after Jim Jordan wrapped up his failed bid to take the job on Friday (Oct 20), prompting at least nine new candidates to sign up ahead of a new selection process this week.

Trump in New Hampshire

As per Reuters, the US presidential hopeful ahead of the elections next year, was welcomed amid cheers in the US state as he filed for the presidential primary.

During the 2016 race after Trump had signed up on the first day of the filing period, he sent Vice President Mike Pence to file his paperwork for the 2020 contest in line with the tradition of other incumbents who asked their surrogates to finish the paperwork.

“Vote for Trump and solve your problems,” he wrote on the commemorative poster at the statehouse in the city ofConcord that all the candidates are asked to sign, as per the Associated Press.

According to the AP, candidates this year have until October 27 to officially sign up and dozens of White House hopefuls are expected to do so in the upcoming days.

Notably, while Trump had won both the 2016 and 2020 Republican primaries in New Hampshire, he lost the state in both general elections.

About the Speaker race

When asked if he would endorse Republican Representative Tom Emmer’s bid as the House of Representatives speaker, Trump said Emmer called him up asking for his support as well as others who were vying for the position.

He added, “Well, we’re looking at a lot of people and, you know, I’m sort of trying to stay out of that as much as possible, but they’ll get it straightened out.”

He also took a shot at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis while touting his wide lead in current New Hampshire polls. Trump said that support for DeSantis in the US state has dropped significantly.

“I think DeSantis is really going down it looks like. I just looked at a poll that came out and he was in third place and he's another one where, as I call him Ron Desanctimonious, he was in fifth place.”
