US presidential election 2024: Joe Biden's family urging him to stay in race, says report

The family of United States (US) President Joe Biden has urged the 81-year-old to stay in the 2024 presidential race and keep fighting, despite his bad performance at the presidential debate with Trump last week which heightened voter concerns thathe might not be fit to serve another four-year term.

According to a report by The New York Times (NYT) on Sunday (June 30), President Biden huddled with his wife, children, and grandchildren at Camp David whilehe tried to figure out how to tamp down Democratic anxiety.

The report said that while Biden's relativeswere acutely aware of how poorly he did against Donald Trump in the debate,they argued that he could still show the country that he remained capable of serving another term.

'Entire family is united'

One of the strongest voices imploring Biden to resist pressure to drop out from the race was his son Hunter, a person familiar with developments told The NYT. Hunter wants American citizens tosee the version of his father that he knows — scrappy and in command of the facts — rather than the stumbling, ageing president citizens saw during the debate on June 27.

This person said that at least one of Biden's grandchildren expressed interestin getting more involved with the campaign, perhaps by talking with influencers on social media.

Another person familiar with developments told the publication that the entire family was united.

'Biden shouldn't run for president'

An increasing number of voters, including Democrats, do not think that Biden should be running for president following his debate with Trump, a survey from CBS News showed.

According to the survey, most voters who said that Biden should not run have given the reason being hiscampaigning and his effectiveness in office, along with his age.

Trump, by contrast, finds a wide view among Republicans that heshouldbe running, the survey added.
