'Worst devastation I have seen,' says Angelina Jolie in Iraq's Mosul

UNHCR envoy Angelina Jolie visited Mosul, Iraq, on Saturday, June 16, with the United Nations Refugee Agency almost a year after it was declared “liberated” from ISIS terrorists.

Jolie, who is currently in between her new custody arrangements with Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, urged the international community not to forget residents trying to rebuild their city.

This is Jolie's fifth trip to Iraq. “This is the worst devastation I have seen in all my years working with UNHCR. People here have lost everything,” Jolie said in a UNstatement.

“They are destitute. They have no medicine for their children, and many have no running water or basic services,” she said. “I hope there will be a continued commitment to rebuilding and stabilizing the whole of the city. And I call on the international community not to forget Mosul.”

While in Mosul, Jolie met with displaced families to discuss efforts to rebuild the city and provide needs for its returning population, a readout on the UNHCR website read.

Aerial bombardment by Iraqi and coalition warplanes and explosives planted by the extremist group contributed to the significant destruction of the city.

Jolie has worked for UNHCR since 2001, visiting uprooted civilians from Iraq to Cambodia and Kenya.

The actress and activist’s mission comes just four days after reports said that Jolie and Pitt, 54, reached a new temporary custody agreement over their six children for the summer.

Pitt will have physical custody of the minor children, excluding Maddox, for four hours a day from June 8 to 17 in London, according to reports. Jolie and the children are staying in London while she films Maleficent 2.

The agreement also laid out the dates during the summer that Pitt will have custody.

Pitt and Jolie split in September 2016 after two years of marriage and 12 years together.
