An article published in The New York Times with a headline 'Is Putin a CIA agent'became a butt of jokes on Twitter on Thursday.
American journalist and author, Thomas Friedman wrote a column in which he discussedUS President Donald Trump and his reluctance to say anything 'negative' about Russia and how James Clapper a former director of National Intelligence had reportedly said that the way Putin manages Trump as if he were a "Russian intelligence asset".
Fridman in the article askedthat if he were a Russian citizen, he'd be asking "Is Putin a US agent?"
"Why? Because Putin has undertaken so many actions in recent years that contributed to the weakening of Russia’s economy and human capital base that you have to wonder whether he’s secretly on the CIA’s payroll," the article reads.
The article further hit out againstRussia's intervention in Syria which Friedman said was "another short-term sugar high for his base."
After the article waspublished, Friedman was slammed by his fellow journalists calling it "breathtakingly stupid"and "dumb".
The Twitterati also ridicule the article in the most savage way possible:
Friedmanalso calledPutin "insecure"about his popularity becausehe did not allowany independent candidate to run against him in the latest presidential election.
"Why is Putin so insecure about his real popularity in Russia that even after nearly 20 years at Russia’s helm, he was afraid to allow a single credible independent candidate to run against him in the latest presidential election?"
"Here’s the real truth: Putin consistently acts like a farmer who sells his most valuable beef in return for cubes of sugar," Friedman's article said.
