Turkey: 47 accused in newborn trafficking case linked to hospital fraud

In Turkey, 47 individuals, including healthcare workers, are on trial for their alleged involvement in a shocking newborn trafficking scam. Prosecutors have accused doctors, nurses, and ambulance drivers of orchestrating the fraudulent transfer of infants between hospitals, leading to at least 10 deaths.

The shocking case

According to the 1400-page indictment, the accused individuals would give newborns false medical diagnoses to justify their transfer to 19 private hospitals. There, the newborn babies were reportedly kept in neonatal intensive care units for unnecessarily long periods, with those involved profiting from inflated social security payments earned from each day of hospitalisation.

The defendants deny any wrongdoing, and as per BBC, they insist that they made the decisions in good faith and were acting in the best interests of the children.

One of the accused, Dr Firat Sari, while talking to the news agency, Associated Press,defended the actions of the medical staff, stating, "Everything was done in accordance with procedures."

However, the 1,400-page indictment alleges that this elaborate scheme exploited both vulnerable families and the healthcare system. Authorities say those charged worked in tandem, sharing the profits generated by extended, and often unwarranted, neonatal treatments.

Public outcry and protest

The trial has sparked public outrage. Outside the Istanbul courthouse, demonstrators chanted slogans like "baby killers will be held accountable" and "private hospitals should be shut down" reported the Associated Press.

The investigation, which began in March 2023 after an anonymous tip-off, has already led to the closure of 10 hospitals tied to the case. If found guilty, the defendants face severe charges, including "homicide through negligence," fraud, and forgery and lengthy prison sentences.
