There will be hell to pay: Trump's security advisor warns Iran's clerics

John Bolton

US National Security Advisor has warned Iran's clerics that the country may have to "hell to pay" if they harm US citizens.

While addressing an anti-Iran conference in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Bolton said, " The murderous regime and its supporters will face significant consequences if they do not change their behavior. Let my message today be clear: We are watching, and we will come after you".

He also said that the US would be aggressive in enforcing economic sanctions on Iran.

Bolton's comments came hours after Trump accused Iran of sowing "chaos, death and destruction" across the Middle East.

Trump criticised Iran on Tuesday as a "corrupt dictatorship" that is plundering the Iranian people to pay for aggression abroad, using his speech to the United Nations General Assembly to lay down a tough message for Tehran.

"Iran's leaders sow chaos, death and destruction," Trump told the annual gathering. "They do not respect their neighbours or borders or the sovereign rights of nations."

Iran President Hassan Rouhani responded to Bolton by criticising Trump administration for hostility.
