
SouthKoreaon Wednesday announced newsanctionson two individuals and two entitiesovertheir alleged involvement in NorthKorea'sweaponsprogrammes, Seoul's foreign ministry said.
Thesanctionstarget Choi Chon Gon, a formerSouthKoreannationalwho acquiredRussiancitizenship, two companies Choi owns and a NorthKorean who supported Choi, the ministry said.
Choi is accused of helping NorthKorea's illegal financial activities in violation of United Nations Security Councilsanctionsafter acquiringRussiancitizenship.
"It marks the first time our government has imposed unilateralsanctionson an individual ofKorean descent," the ministry said in a statement.
Reuters was unable to immediately reach Choi for comment.
Nuclear-armed NorthKoreahas been testing variousweaponsincluding its biggest intercontinental ballistic missile, ramping up tension with Seoul and theSouth's main ally, the United States.
