Nearly 186.5 million Americans are eligible to vote to choose the 47th president of the United States. The elected candidate will represent the country for the next four years.

South Dakota, a landlocked state in the North Central region of the United States has three electoral votes for which there is a contest between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump. Two independent or third-party candidates are also in the fray, including Robert F. Kennedy, who dropped out of the race in August and backed Donald Trump.

South Dakota is the 17th-largest by area, but the fifth-least populous of the 50 states in the country. It has traditionally been loyal to the Republicans in presidential elections. The only Democratic presidential candidate to win from here in the last 84 years was President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. During the 2020 election Trump won 62% of the vote in the state against 36% polled by President Joe Biden.

The state has 680,775 registered voters as of Oct. 1, 2024.

Voters will elect one candidate to serve in the U.S. House from the state's one at-large U.S. House district. In order to win a fourth term from the state, Republican incumbent Dusty Johnson has to defeat rival Sheryl Johnson of the Democrat.

South Dakota does not have U.S. Senate offices on the ballot this year. Trump ally Gov. Kristi Noem and two other GOP U.S. Senators from the state are not up for election in 2024.
