Rubio departs for India in high-stakes diplomatic visit ahead of Quad meeting

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio departed for India on Friday (May 22) evening, kicking off a four-day visit that will take him across the country as Washington seeks to deepen one of its most strategically vital partnerships in the Indo-Pacific. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed that Rubio is officially en route, fresh from attending a crucial NATO Foreign Ministers' Meeting and concluding key bilateral security and economic talks in Helsingborg, Sweden.

Sergio took to X to post, “Just got a call from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio — he’s taking off for India right now! Excited for this important trip!”

Rubio will travel to India for a three-day visit, taking in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, where he will discuss energy security, trade, and defence cooperation with senior Indian officials, according to US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott.

The visit is scheduled to run from May 23 to 26, culminating in the Quad foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi. The Quad is a strategic grouping comprising the United States, India, Japan, and Australia, which has increasingly focused on countering Chinese influence in the region and securing critical mineral supply chains. The May 2026 New Delhi meeting is best understood as the next chapter following last year's Quad Critical Minerals Initiative, building toward a planned Quad Leaders' Summit on Indian soil later in 2026.
