Planning a trip to Brazil in 2025? New visa will require proof of funds for US visitors

Stricter travel authorisation programs are on hold for now (again). The European Union's ETIAS program and Brazil's new visa system for US, Canadian and Australian visitors have both been delayed.

However, these delays only mean that the program has been postponed. While 2024 offers relaxation in the visa rules, 2025 will bring changes for travellers from thethree countries heading to Brazil.

What are the new visa requirements for Brazil in 2025

From April 10, 2025, US, Canadian and Australian citizens will need a visa to enter Brazil. But the good news is that travellers can apply for a convenient electronic visa (e-visa) online instead of visiting a consulate.

The e-visa will cost $80.90 and will be valid for 10 years with multiple entries, while stays would be limited to 90 days per year.

The visa was previously due to be introduced at the startof 2024 or, rather, reintroduced. Until 2019, US travellers to Brazil were required to get visas. Evisas were introduced in 2018 before the system was abolished entirely.

What you'll need to apply for a Brazilian visa

The application requirements are:

Letter of Intent: This document should detail your travel dates, purpose of trip, and confirmed accommodation details.
Proof of Residence: Documentation verifying your residency in the US.
Travel Documents: Round-trip tickets to Brazil (or a signed return declaration if not available).
Proof of Income: The last three months of bank statements or the last six payslips, showing an average monthly balance of at least $2,000. Those who don't meet this requirement can find a sponsor to vouch for their finances.

These requirements may seem difficult, but visa systems are often based on reciprocity. Brazilians face similar, and even stricter, hurdles when traveling to the US.

Currently, most Brazilian citizens need to schedule an in-person visa appointment and demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover their entire trip. A US visa, even for those simply transiting through the country, costs a steeper $185.

Processing times and tourist numbers

The processing time for a Brazilian visa is expected to average five business days.However, the company handling applications recommends applying at least two months before your trip.

Despite these upcoming changes, Brazil remains a popular tourist destination. The country saw nearly six million visitors in 2023, with US citizens ranking second only to Argentinians in the first nine months of the year.
