Nancy Pelosi, former House Speaker privately told US President Joe Biden in a recent conversation that various pollsindicatethat he cannot defeat Donald Trump and that his continued pursuit of a second term could risk Democrats' chances of winning the House in November, according to sources.
On hearing this, the president replied that he has seen polls that show he can win, one source toldCNN.
At one point, Pelosi even asked Mike Donilon, Biden’s longtime adviser, to get on the line to talk over the data, said another source.
Notably, this phone call marked the second conversation between the California lawmaker and Biden since the president’s disastrous debate on June 27.
The actual date of the conversation was not clear, but the source described it as being within the last week. Pelosi and Biden also spoke in early July.
While none of the sources specified whether Pelosi told Biden that she believes the president should drop out of the 2024 race.
In the weeks following the debate, Pelosi has been listening to concerns from her colleagues. She made headlines last week after she said in an interview, "It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run. We’re all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running short."
However, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates did not respond when asked about the recent Pelosi-Biden call.
“President Biden is the nominee of the party. He plans to win and looks forward to working with congressional Democrats to pass his 100 days agenda to help working families,” Bates said.
Meanwhile, top Democrat leader Adam Schiff publicly urged United States President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race for another candidate.
House Representative Schiff became the most heavyweight Democrat so far to ask Biden to make way for somebody else to face Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for November presidential elections.
But Schiff told the Los Angeles Times that he doubts the 81-year-old incumbent can defeat Trump, whom he described as a threat to "the very foundation of our democracy."
The Californian, who is expected to win a Senate seat this November, is one of the most influential members of the Democratic Party.
Schiff served as chairman of the House intelligence panel when Democrats had the majority in 2019. He shot to nationwide prominence as lead prosecutor during then-president Trump's first impeachment trial.
The cancellation of the Las Vegas event comes amid increasing pressure from donors and elected Democrats in Washington for Biden to withdraw from the campaign following his disastrous performance in a debate against Donald Trump last month.
