Seven people have been wounded in Paris after they were attacked by a man armed with a knife and an iron bar, according to police and other sources.

Police have arrested one man in connection with the incident, which took place on the banks of a popular canal in the northeastern district of Quai de la Loire.

A total of seven people were injured, including four people who were reported to be in critical condition. The suspect was also injured and was said to be unconscious.

"Nothing at this stage shows signs of a terrorist nature in these assaults," the sources said.

The AFP news agency reported that the suspect is a man from Afghanistan who targeted strangers in the street. It added that, according to a source close to the investigation, there is no indication of a link to terrorism.

A police investigation has been launched into attempted murder, according to a judicial source.

Previous month, two people were killed and one was seriously wounded in a knife attack in the Paris suburb of Trappes.

The Daesh terror organization back then claimed that they had carried out the attack, but French prosecutors did not treat the incident as a case of terrorism.

This summer, France has suffered from an increase in violent offences, with stabbing attacks, sexual assaults, and fights occurring across the country.
