An attack by a father and son on a Jewish Hanukkah celebration at Sydney's Bondi Beach on Sunday killed 16 people and injured at least 40. More than 1,000 people had gathered at Bondi Beach on the first day of Hanukkah. During a press conference on Monday morning (local time), New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon revealed that the two males - 50-year-old and 24-year-old - have been identified as the shooters of the attack.
Who are the shooters?
While one gunman has been identified as 24-year-old male Naveed Akram by the authorities, Australian Broadcasting Corporation quoting sources identified another as 50-year-old Sajid Akram. While Naveed Akram was apprehended at the scene and taken to the hospital, Sajid Akram was killed during the shooting.
ABC news reported that Naveed Akram was laid off from his bricklaying job about two months ago after the company he worked for became insolvent. According to the Financial Review, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said that Sajid Akram had held a gun license for approximately 10 years. They reportedly lived in Bonnyrigg. Ahead of the shooting, they stayed at a property in Campsie. Another picture of Akram's New South Wales driver's licence is also going viral on social media, however, its authenticity has not been verified.
Furthermore, ABC News reported that Australia’s domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, investigated Naveed Akram over his close ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State (IS) terrorism cell, about six years ago. Citing a Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) official, that “an IS flag was found in the men's car at Bondi Beach,” it reported that the official said ASIO took an interest in Naveed Akram six years ago after police foiled plans for an IS terrorist attack.

The shooting unfolded during “Hanukkah by the Sea,” a public event held at Bondi Beach in Sydney to mark the start of the Jewish holiday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the attackers were “deliberately targeting the Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah.”
