At least 257 killed as military plane crashes in Algeria
Russian-made military plane crashes shortly after takeoff from Boufarik airbase outside the capital, Algiers.
An Algerian military plane crashed on Wednesday with around 257people, mostly military personnel, on board.
A military source told media that there were no survivors.
The plane, an Ilyushin Il-76,was carrying scores of military troops, according to the reports.
Earlier Algerian state radio reportedthat at least 100 passengers were killed in the crash.
Twenty-six members of Polisario Front, supported by Algeria and seeking independence from Morocco for Western Sahara, are said to be among the dead.
The incident happened shortly after the plane took off from Boufarik military airport near the capital Algiers, but reasons for the crash remain unclear.
The crash occurred in Boufarik, a town in Blida Province, approximately 30 km from the capital Algiers.
A statement from the defence ministry confirming the crash gave no casualty toll.
