North Korea leader Kim Jong-Un arrives in Singapore ahead of historic summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un arrived in Singapore on Sunday ahead of the crucial and historic summit with US President Donald Trump.

A long convoy of the North Korean leader was seen going out of Changi Airport's VIP area. He is set to have a bilateral meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong later on Sunday.

The highly anticipated summit between the two leaders on June 12 will centre on Pyongyang's nuclear programme and economic assistance from Washington.

Kim will be meeting Singapore Prime MinisterLee Hsien Loong in the city-state later today.

Security around the St Regis and Shangri-La Hotel near the shopping area of Orchard Road were tightened with road blocks set to kick in from June 10 onwards. The two luxury hotels are said to be where Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un will be staying during their four-day visit. Neither of the hotels have confirmed.

In the meeting on June 12, US President Donald Trump will deploy a mix of charm and pressure to coax North Korean leader Kim Jong Un into a deal to give up nuclear weapons, trusting his gut instinct over briefing books in his ability to strike an accord, aides and former administration officials said.

The Singapore summit will be the first face-to-face meeting between Trump, the former reality TV star who likes to keep people guessing up to a cliffhanger finish, and Kim, the heir to a reclusive dynasty with a history of reneging on promises to curb its nuclear ambitions. More than 3,000 journalists are due in town, along with delegations and security entourages.

The main issue for the June 12 summit in Singapore is the US demand for North Korea to abandon a nuclear weapons program that now threatens the United States.

North Korea has rejected giving up its arsenal unilaterally and defends its nuclear and missile programs as a deterrent against what it sees as US aggression. The United States stations 28,500 troops in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War.
