Joe Biden and Donald Trump win elections in some of 2024’s last primary contests

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump secured victories in Democratic and Republican primaries across several states on Tuesday (June 4), marking some of the final contests on the 2024 primary calendar.

Donald Trump, come out on the ballot for the first time since his conviction for felony crimes, won primaries in New Mexico, where voters could opt for his rivals who have since dropped out, and Montana and New Jersey, where he was unopposed.

While, Biden won Democratic primaries in New Mexico, South Dakota, New Jersey, Montana and Washington, D.C.

Trump and Biden were both expected to easily win through in all of Tuesday’s contests as the last major candidates still running.

But with many Americans saying in polls that they don’t want a rematch of the 2020 election, Tuesday’s results were watched for voter concerns about their choices as November’s election barrels closer.

Trump's dominance throughout the GOP primary season has been accompanied by support from a minority of GOP voters for former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who withdrew from the race in March.

Tuesday's contests were the first since Haley announced two weeks ago that she would vote for Trump in November.

New Mexico

In New Mexico, where Haley was still on the ballot, several thousand voters cast ballots for Haley, but she was running below 10% of the vote late on Tuesday.

Biden has encountered a protest vote in recent elections, with Democratic voters expressing dissatisfaction with his management of Israel's conflict with Hamas.

New Jersey

In New Jersey’s primary, uncommitted was on the ballot in various counties above the phrase, Justice For Palestine, Permanent Ceasefire Now!

Over 35,000 people voted “uncommitted’ in New Jersey on late Tuesday.

Following Tuesday's events, Democrats have two more caucuses scheduled for June 8, involving Guam and the US Virgin Islands, to conclude their 2024 primary calendar.

South Dakota

South Dakota cancelled its GOP presidential primary because Trump was uncontested. Meanwhile, voters on Tuesday also cast ballots in primary races for federal, state and local offices in those states.

Montana

Ex Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy won the Republican nomination for US Senate in Montana. Sheehy, who had the backing of Trump and national Republican leaders, will challenge Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in what’s expected to be one of the most competitive races that could decide control of the chamber.

DC

In Washington, D.C., voters were casting their ballots to choose the city's nonvoting delegate to the U.S. House.

lowa

The presidential contests were kicked off in January with its first-in-the-nation caucuses, voters were choosing candidates in primary elections for local races and US House seats, including one that could play a key role in determining control of the House.
